This test is an in vitro real-time PCR test for the quantitative detection of the Human immunodeficiency Virus Type I (HIV-1) RNA nucleic acid levels in human plasma or serum. It is used as an aid in the diagnosis of HlV-1 infection and monitoring the effects of antiretroviral treatment. Positive results are indicative of the presence of HIV-1 RNA: Positive results do not rule out bacterial infection or co-infection with other viruses.
